PRK

What is PRK?

For patients in the Inland Empire area who may not be ideal candidates for LASIK, Schneider LASIK Centers offers a proven procedure known as PRK (photorefractive keratectomy). Since the approval of PRK, there have been many improvements in the laser and the techniques used for surface laser vision correction. PRK uses laser treatment on the surface of the cornea after removing the surface cells (called the epithelium) which then regrow.

Schneider LASIK Centers offers PRK to residents of Corona, Riverside, the Inland Empire, and Orange County.

Dr. Mark Schneider of Schneider LASIK Centers uses a state-of-the-art, computerized excimer laser to gently remove a thin layer of tissue from the cornea’s surface and reshape it to the patient’s proper correction to help eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Prior to your PRK procedure, you may be given medication to help you relax, and eye drops are placed in the eye to numb it. Once the eye is numb, a small instrument is placed around the eye to keep you from blinking. The laser treatment itself lasts less than 60 seconds, and most patients feel little or no discomfort.

PRK Post-Treatment

Many of our patients experience some improvement in their vision almost immediately, although it is not uncommon for your vision to be somewhat blurry until the surface heals. During the 24-48 hours after the PRK treatment, most patients will experience a gritty sensation in the eye as well as some minor discomfort. Typically, Schneider LASIK Centers patients notice a significant improvement in their vision within 3-5 days following their PRK treatment.

The results for PRK laser vision correction are impressive. In the U.S. clinical trials, 100 percent of PRK patients studied experienced improved vision. More than 90 percent returned to 20/40 sight or better and were able to enjoy life and perform most activities without wearing glasses or contact lenses. Two-thirds of the patients in this study achieved 20/20 vision.

This combination of experience and reputation, technology, safety, and integrity is the Schneider LASIK Centers difference.
