PRK vs. LASIK

Woman Thinking

Many patients who opt for laser vision correction treatment are confused by the differences in the treatments of LASIK and PRK. Dr. Mark Schneider and the Schneider LASIK Centers team equip patients with all of the information they need to know to be better able to make an informed decision about the treatment that will be best suited for them.

LASIK

Both LASIK and PRK are pain-free; however, many patients prefer the LASIK procedure because of the fast recovery and quick vision restore. And although most doctors will advise patients with severe nearsightedness to opt for LASIK, patients with lower to moderate amounts of myopia may be a candidate for either procedure.

Our LASIK procedure is called IntraLase®, a blade-free, all-laser method of LASIK. Dr. Schneider uses a gentle laser to create the corneal flap. IntraLase® allows Dr. Schneider to better customize the corneal flap for each patient. The procedure produces a flap that is much more precise in depth, is cleaner, more accurate and is thinner. This results in many benefits to the LASIK patient.

PRK

PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) uses laser treatment on the surface of the cornea after removing the surface cells (called the epithelium) which then regrow..

Post-Treatment Comparison

Eye medications are used with both procedures, and with PRK, clear contact lenses are placed in each eye to prevent infection. Discomfort is possible for about five to six hours after LASIK, while medication is given after PRK that can be used for one to two days. No stitches are required with LASIK, as the flap that was created is held in place with the natural pressure of the eye. No incisions or needles are required with PRK.
